“The Malawi Children Initiative (MCI) has been a tremendous blessing in both my academic journey and my personal life. When I was admitted to KUHeS in 2022, I did not have the financial means to begin my studies. I had reserved my place because I could not afford the tuition fees. By God's grace, I met Dr. Elizabeth Fitzgerald, who generously offered me an MCI scholarship. That opportunity completely changed the course of my life.

Since then, MCI has supported me by covering my tuition fees, accommodation, and a food allowance, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies. In 2023, I was also privileged to receive a laptop, which has been an invaluable resource throughout my medical education.

Thanks to MCI's unwavering support, I have been able to maintain strong academic performance and progress smoothly through medical school. This is now my fourth year as an MCI scholarship recipient, and I have two years remaining before completing my undergraduate medical degree.

I have recently started my clinical rotations in Lilongwe and am currently attached to the Department of Internal Medicine. I am thoroughly enjoying the experience, and it has sparked a strong interest in pursuing Internal Medicine as a specialty. I am also deeply passionate about Cardiothoracic Surgery, especially because Malawi currently has very limited expertise in this field. My hope is to one day specialize in Cardiothoracic Surgery and contribute to developing this specialty in my country. However, I remain open-minded, as I still have several clinical rotations ahead of me that may further shape my career aspirations.

I am sincerely grateful for the support MCI has given me over the years. It has opened doors that would otherwise have remained closed and has given me the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor. Although I can never fully repay this kindness, I am committed to working hard, maintaining excellent academic standards, and using my knowledge and skills to serve my community and make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

A note from Moyenda:

“I began my medical training in 2019 as a self-sponsored student with a strong passion for serving others through medicine. However, the financial burden of medical school was overwhelming. I struggled to pay my tuition fees, secure accommodation, and meet my daily living expenses. To keep my dream alive, I took out several bank loans, yet there were times when I faced the real possibility of being withdrawn from the university because I could no longer afford the costs of my education.

Everything changed when MCI, through the kindness and generosity of Dr. Elizabeth Fitzgerald, came to my rescue. From my third year until my final year, MCI faithfully supported me by paying my tuition fees and providing accommodation and meal allowances. This support lifted an enormous burden from my shoulders and gave me the peace of mind to focus wholeheartedly on my studies instead of constantly worrying about finances.

Because of this life-changing support, I was able to complete my medical education successfully and graduate as a Medical Doctor. Your generosity did far more than pay my educational expenses—it restored my hope, strengthened my determination, and made it possible for me to achieve a lifelong dream.

Upon completing my internship, I aspire to pursue a residency in pediatric surgery. I am drawn to this specialty because I believe that children are the foundation of our nation's future. By providing high-quality surgical care to children, I hope to improve their health and well-being, enabling them to grow into healthy, productive adults who will contribute to the development and prosperity of our society.”

A note from Noel:

“I am currently pursuing a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics and Child Health at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), where I am developing my skills in caring for critically ill children and addressing key challenges affecting child health.

 

Since 2023, I have been supported by the Malawi Children’s Initiative (MCI), which has played an important role in my professional journey by supporting my postgraduate training and personal development. Through this support, I have been able to strengthen my clinical knowledge, participate in paediatric research, and contribute towards improving healthcare outcomes for children in Malawi.

 

My academic and research interests include severe acute malnutrition, infectious diseases, paediatric critical care, and improving outcomes for vulnerable children. My current research focuses on understanding how caregivers’ socioeconomic status influences readmission rates among children treated for severe acute malnutrition at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

 

My ambition is to become a specialist paediatrician, educator, and researcher who contributes to strengthening child health services in Malawi, advances evidence-based care, and inspires future generations of healthcare professionals.”
